Pablo De Pablo, the celebrated conceptual artist, ‘free-range’ musician and beat poet has finally released the highly anticipated ‘Christ’s Chin’ audio recording on his own label, PDP International®
‘The day after it happened, and when I had regained consciousness, I told my friend Decoux that I had to put the experience down in whatever format inspiration chose,’ explains Pablo.
The experience Pablo refers to is his own near death experience and its culmination, the utterly awe-inspiring meeting with Christ’s Chin.
January 2009 and Pablo was working on the now legendary project 12 Hours, an installation presented as 26 rooms depicting the last 12 hours of a Torquay prostitute’s life and subsequent savage murder. During this harrowing period of the project Pablo had insisted on skipping everywhere. It would, he insisted, ‘replace my normal walk.’
Pablo explains, ‘It was a very difficult time for me, my cat, Orpheus, had just committed suicide, or at least that’s what the vet had concluded, and I was working on 12 Hours. I was experiencing the kind of intensity I’m not sure anyone was feeling in the entire world at that moment in time. I guess a defence mechanism kicked in and I was trying to lighten my mood by skipping instead of walking, after a few days it became quite natural.’
Distracted one afternoon by a particularly important cellular telephone conversation while skipping through London’s Soho, Pablo had inadvertently bypassed cordons and fallen down a manhole that had been left open while contractors ate lunch.
‘All I remember’, explains Pablo, ‘is discussing the merits of 12 Hours with my publicist when suddenly, in mid-skip, I was falling and everything was dark and there was an overpowering odour similar to that of cat urine.’
Pablo had fallen 15 feet and landed in an open sewage pipe. His fall had been cushioned by raw sewage but an outlet pipe had knocked him unconscious. Amazingly, no one had seen Pablo’s dramatic descent and he was left there for the next hour while contractors finished their lunch in a nearby pub.
Pablo continues, ‘its taken over 6 years to source and compile the audio journey for my out of body experience. Each audio movement within Christ’s Chin represents a different stage of the experience. It’s taken so long to compile my audio experience because I found myself breaking down every time I attempted to work on the project. Friends would find me slumped over my workstation, sobbing, sometimes losing control of my bodily functions such was the intensity of attempting to recall the audio-emotions of that day.’
Christ’s Chin is a spiritual journey, recalled by Pablo in painstaking detail. Listeners are encouraged to pay special attention to the samples, the atmospheric emotio-binding and the contextual layering of audio-bites.
Pablo explains, ‘I will not say at what point the audio journey finds itself confronted with Christ’s Chin and the subsequent falling back into the physical form, I wanted to allow listeners to decipher that for themselves. All I will say is this project took me over 6 years because of its intensity, its all-encompassing ability to attack not just the hearing of the listener and compiler but all of the senses. I defy people to suggest that Christ’s Chin is not an attack on the senses.’
When asked if and when Pablo will present the world with a visual accompaniment to his spiritual journey the award winning artist simply shrugs, ‘They’ll have to wait until I’m ready.’
Pre-release reviews of Pablo De Pablo’s ‘Christ’s Chin.’
‘I have never had an out of body experience, but if I do, I pray it will sound like this.’ (Decoux Lung, Conceptual Artist, regular contributor to Teat Magazine.)
‘’When I first listened to this audio file I found myself sobbing like some kind of deranged child. Listening to it changed my life, I felt as if I was taken to Pablo’s sewage filled ‘burial’ site and thrust deep inside him like some kind of deranged homo-sexual. Thankfully, I am not deranged but when I want to feel that way I will listen to Pablo De Pablo’s Christ’s Chin, that’s the kind of power this audio file expels and I would recommend its absorption to every single living thing on this planet.’
(Rupert Kang, Prince Lizard Times Magazine, UK edition.)
‘Christ’s Chin is the closest thing to audio genius I have ever heard. If the world ended tomorrow, Pablo De Pablo would be King of all creative minds and I would be the plankton that nibbled him clean.’ (Oscar Lantern, Hidden Writes Magazine.)
‘Pablo De Pablo’s work continues to simultaneously revolt and inspire me. In this case, Christ’s Chin suggests he has reached the pinnacle of his narcissism. If there was any justice in this world Pablo De Pablo would be disembowelled over Tower Bridge to the salivating delight of the brainless masses.’ (Leopold Starch, Jam TV)
‘I have a good solicitor, my wife has left me, I have no kids, I have been meaning to write a few novels before I turn 50, why not murder Pablo De Pablo?’ (John Breville, author and broadcaster.)
‘I sat myself down with a pair of headphones, a nice mug of hot chocolate and a plate of chips and listened to Pablo De Pablo’s Christ’s Chin at full volume and on repeat. I am now resident at Springfield Secure Hospital in Wandsworth. That’s how powerful this audio file is.’ (Calum Le Drier, former editor, The Church Times.)
‘Reviewing this audio file was like stroking little puppies for 2 hours and then watching them drown in a bath full of vomit.’ (Lester Proctor, writer and broadcaster.)
‘If a journey to heaven sounds like this I’m reaching for that full bottle of sleeping tablets right now.’ (Danny Dung, Children’s Presenter, BBC’s CBeebies Channel.)
